Is it Safe to Stay in a Hostel?

When you travel in many parts of the world, especially Europe and South East Asia, the most popular accommodation option will be a hostel. This can be seen as a highly sociable way of staying in another country, allowing you to meet other travellers from all over the world and share your stories. However, there can also be some concerns about safety.

You may be especially concerned if you are a woman travelling alone. Hostels can have a bad reputation, especially with mixed dorms and uncooperative roommates. You may also be worried about theft and belongings going missing. Of course, these are very legitimate safety concerns, but you shouldn’t let it put you off staying in a hostel. Have your wits about you and keep valuables close, or lock them up in lockers where possible. If anything doesn’t feel right, report it to hostel staff immediately. Other than that, relax, have a great time and start getting to know your roommates!
